Red Galactic Serpent

"We use the image of the cobra Ananta, the king of serpents, carrying the whole universe on his head while providing a bed for lord vishnu on his coiled body. Ananta must be completely relaxed in order to make a soft bed for the lord. This is the idea of sukha. Yet the snake can not be feeble and weak; it must be strong and steady in order to support the universe. That is the idea of sthira. Together these qualities give us the image and feeling of a perfect asana"- an excerpt from The Heart of Yoga by TKV Desikachar

New Moon in Scorpio

This new moon presents us with a chance to tune into what is within. Calling upon higher paths of consciousness to reveal the details we have been missing- opening new doors and brining emotional strength. The lunar energies at work make this a good time to give in to the unknown and let the mystery reveal itself, releasing all fear of our own potential and putting energy into what can be done to accelerate us more into the direction we are going.

"In the process of yoga one's true nature is revealed by removing the objects in the mind field that are obstructing self realization"- Baba Hri Dass

अता योगनुशासनाम
Atha yoganushasanam
Now the discipline of yoga is being explained.

योगश चीता वृत्ति निरोधः
Yogash-chitta-vritti-nirodah
Yoga is the cessation of mental processes

तदा द्रष्टुः स्वरूपे वेस्थानाम
Tada drashtuh svarupe vasthanam
Then when the thought waves are controlled the seer is established in his own true nature

There are endless possibilities in consciousness. Conscious thoughts are what manifest our reality. According the Patanjali's second sutra, when practicing yoga we are working towardscontrolling these waves of thought that consume our consciousness. The third sutra goes on to state that by controlling our thoughts, the "underlying consciousness principle is revealed" causing Self-realization. Realizing the self, or coming into one's own true nature means that the self must be completely isolated from all things- in other words: being totally aware and present within the self and honoring the highest form of self bring one to a state of
Kaivalya (freedom).

The Five Vayus

Prana, is a sanskrit word which means life force (sometimes referred to as breath). One of our five sublte bodies (Koshas) is the Pranamaya Kosha or vital body, and is made up of energetic compartments known as the Vayus (winds). The energies of these five vayus are very subtle and exact. They can be controled by bringing focus to specific areas of the body. Increasing the awareness of the vayus brings health, well-being, and helps to activate Kundalini energy.

Prana Vayu: Located at the third eye, energy flows inwards and upwards governing the chest (heart)- nourishing the brain and eyes, governs the reception of food, air, senses, and thought. This is the fundamental energy of the body and directly feeds the other four vayus. Prana Vayu is a natural force that drives us through life, setting things into motion and guiding them through. To experience prana vayu- sitting or standing relaxed with a straight spine, inhale from the belly to the third eye-exhale, let the breath fall back to your belly, repeat.

Apana Vayu: Located in the lower abdomen/pelvic floor, energy flows downwards and out, and nourishes the organs of digestion, reproduction, and elimination. It monitors the elimination of excess substances from the body such as carbon monoxide, urine, stool, semen, and menstrual fluid. Apana Vayu also aids in elimination of negativity from our body/mind, and is base of all levels of our immune system functions. To experience apana vayu: sitting or standing relaxed with a straight spine, inhale breath to the crown of your head, exhale- feel the breath move from the crown of your head down to your tailbone, repeat.

Vyana Vayu: Located in the heart/lungs and flows through the entire body. Energy flows from the center of the body outwards. Governs circulation of all energy through the body- moving food, water, and oxygen, and keeps our emotions circulating helping to keep our mind clear and providing strength. Vyana vayu is an aid to the other vayus. To experience Vyana vayu: sitting or standing relaxed with a straight spine, inhale- feel breath radiate outward from the naval to the arms and legs. Exhale, feel the breath return back tot he naval, repeat.

Udana Vayu: Located in the throat, flows in a circular motion around the head/neck. This vayu's function is to "hold us up", governing speech, self expression, and growth. Upward moving energy, provides transformation of life energy. This is our main positive energy in life helping us to develop more subtle bodies and evolve consciously. To experience udana vayu: sitting or standing relaxed with a straight spine, inhale-exhale feel breath circulating around throat/neck, repeat.

Samana Vayu: Located in the abdomen with energy centered in the naval. Energy flows from the periphery of the body to the center. Works with digestion of all things in the body: gastrointestinal tract (food), lungs (oxygen), mind (experiences). To experience samana vayu: sitting or standing relaxed with a straight spine, inhale and exhale feeling the breath rise and fall in the front, side, and back of the torso.

Full Moon Rooted in Taurus

With the full moon in Taurus, it's the perfect time to integrate the balance we found in Libra's new moon. What is balance without a strong foundation? This full moon inspires actions that bring more stability into your life while reminding us to make the most of what we have and find pleasure in everything we do.  Earthy Taurus wants us to remember the totally amazing reality of the living universe and our natural rhythms. Are you watering the garden of your natural gifts? Are you being honest with the needs of your higher self? Lots of change has been taking place during the last few moon phases. This full moon brings our attention back to the fixed signs pointing out what really needs to stay and become a rooted part of our lives. Cultivate, nurture, blossom!

"Sometimes when our life falls apart it is because it is not held together with consciousness, it is held together by illusion, and so it crumbles, and what is left is actually a clearer vision of what is real and of value.  So many have found their life path only after what they had formerly perceived as their life crumbles to dust.  In other words, it is the illusion of our life which crumbles, leaving reality in its place." - Max Strom
